Repairing teeth
A dental restoration or dental filling is a dental restorative material used to restore the function, integrity and morphology of missing tooth structure. The structural loss typically results from caries or external trauma, what people commonly refer to as holes or broken teeth. Sometimes the living internal part of the tooth, the nerve, can die and require treatment as well.
Options for treatment can be divided into direct restorations (such as composite resin, glass ionomer & amalgam), and indirect restorations such inlays and crowns. Each have advantages and disadvantages.
Material choices for indirect restorations include composite resin, hybrid resins, cast ceramic, pressed ceramic, milled ceramic, gold, non precious metals, alumina and zirconia.
At Smile Doctor, we choose NOT to offer the low cost options of non precious metals and amalgam because of the claimed risks from the complimentary medicine field. Although these claims remain unproven within our profession, we feel this is a potential risk too easily avoided with all the other great choices available today.
