Crowns
In some situations tooth coloured fillings or inlays/onlays will not provide the strength necessary in certain areas of your mouth. A crown can offer better long term protection and aesthetics as it completely encases your tooth. It can be made in gold, zirconia, ceramic or a combination of these.
The procedure for a crown involves:
- Removal of the decayed or brittle tooth structure
- Placement of a foundation if necessary
- Careful preparation of the tooth
- Impressions of your upper and lower teeth
- Shade selection
- Placement of a temporary crown
Approximately two weeks after the preparation appointment, the crown will be ready and this second appointment involves:
- Removal of the temporary crown
- Try in and checking of the new crown
- Careful cleaning and etching of the underlying tooth
- Cleaning and etching of the new crown
- Cementation of the crown using a special dental bond
